Libidinal Surplus
“Libidinal Surplus” is a lecture presented at the Department of Architecture, AUTh, by Eftihis Efthimiou, as part of the “Growth” design studio, at the “Advanced Design: Innovation and Interdisciplinarity” Post Graduate Programm of Studies. The lecture deals with the hedonistic relationship one may have with the act of design. Going through a set of examples from his work, he is trying to showcase instances of creative derogation from the tools intended use and is hunting for the elusive paradox of craftmanship within the (ever reproducible) digital realm.
Growth
The design studio itself is focusing on agent based cellular growth. The workshop begins with a series of tutorials of rapidly increasing complexity, that provide the students with an advanced computational design toolset. Each design example is examined and optimised for manufacturing either via additive deposition, or modular construction. Apart from structural integrity, we aim for an aesthetics of the multiple and the creation of a visual chartography of qualities that better describe the populational nature of the objects. Through a hedonistic involvement with the tools, the students learn to create, control and visualize extremely large and complex data streams (of above 1.500.000 elements), in real time.
